There is a certain charm to the show’s visuals many modern anime fail to capture. Some two-cour series’ visual quality can sag in the middle or end, but the studio’s efforts here are consistent and strong all the way through. Although the show isn’t exactly revolutionary in the visual department, the animation, character designs, and cinematography are all quite pleasing. Toradora! often knows exactly how to balance its comedy, emotional wallops, and character development. It would be dishonest to omit how I clenched my armrests during the race scene in episode 13 and reacted vocally to anything that threatened the leads’ relationship. Toradora! rarely leans completely into this subgenre, but it has some elements that become apparent during the more emotional scenes. In many circles online, she is synonymous with melodrama.

Now might be a good time to mention the person responsible for the series composition, Mari Okada. To put it a certain way: while describing Toradora! as a romantic comedy is not incorrect, this leaves out a large part of the show, which is the drama. While the starting point may be natural, the series is exempt from exaggeration. Of course, the two still scheme to get each other time alone with their love interests, but these plans are done in moderation and never feel forced. These love interests, along with the newcomer Ami Kawashima, also get their own stories Kawashima, though, feels a bit forgotten in the second half of the show. It instead uses its simple-yet-smart starting point to bring the leads closer together in a natural way. Surprisingly, Toradora! doesn’t have many (or any) “wacky misunderstandings” staged by Ryūji and Taiga to inch themselves closer to their crushes. Although the two initially try to help each other with their love interests, as time goes on, their feelings for one another develop. The girl, Taiga Aisaka, is called “The Palm-Top Tiger” for her fierce behavior and small stature she is in love with the diligent Yūsaku Kitamura. The boy, Ryūji Takasu, has an intimidating glare that betrays his empathic interior he is in love with the energetic Minori Kushieda. The setup is pure “boy meets girl” romantic comedy: two high school students discover they have crushes on each other’s best friends. From left to right (going by heads, not legs): Ryūji, Kitamura, Kawashima, Kushieda, and Taiga However, the first part of this review will be spoiler-free, and I will mark when I begin to go into more significant plot details. It is impossible to accurately convey my thoughts on Toradora! without delving into spoiler territory. It aired from 2008 to 2009, with Tatsuyuki Nagai as the director and Yuyuko Takemiya as the original light novel creator.
